Forward Hatch 8/12/09

I was going to drill out the hinge mounts and seal the hatch cover today and instead I decided to fix the sagging edge of the hatch opening. The gutter area was so thin that I wore a hole in it with some 80 grit hand sanding. This had to be a production boo boo. The forward hatch opening has a sag on the hinge side that makes for a leaky situation no matter how you look at it.

If you look close, the hatch cover is cracked. I just fix that last year and now it has a crack in it from me standing on it.

Notice the clamps. You can never have too many clamps. They are holding down a mohogany strip that is the upper frame for the sagging glass opening. It is glued down with epoxy and then will have glass layers sealing the deal.

The fix was to put a piece of mohagany across the fill area and glue it down to the edge and finish it off but shaping it for fit with a plane and some epoxy and glass.

Odd thing happened the other day. We were cleaning the fore deck and peeled a piece of putty from the gutter revieling a 3 inch hole into the vee birth. I didn't notice this when I painted the vee birth. Cool, I was wondering what my next project would be.

Three layers of glass cloth and epoxy for reinforcement on the under side of the hatch. The rain gutter on the hinge end

You can notice the sag in the glass opening.

More of the same after I finished planing and sanding. you can barely make out the mohogany strip between the edge of the glass and the red putty. This is about ready for some glass.

Yours truly preparing mentally for a date with epoxy and glass.

This weekend I will sand on this and shape it for another layer of glass. I will be glad to be done with this. That's all for now. 9/12/09

Forward Hatch 9/16/09

I said I would be here this weekend. I got all the glass work done (so I thought), sanded and painted.

I got that mess carved up sanded. I sure hope that four layers of glass cloth will help strengthen this area.

With the filler strip shaped to the arch of the deck, the forward hatch will have reduced flex. With that said, I can also refix the hatch cover where it has cracked due to poor repair and flex caused by me standing on it.

I thought I was done glassing this area until I saw this photo. There is a crack at the corner of the hatch opening, at least it looks like a crack from here. I gotta start wearing my glasses

Here is the area with polyurethane white on it. Now I gotta mess it up to fix the crack above.

8/19/09 I worked on the hatch cover today, drilling out the crack area and filled it with epoxy. This cover has been rebuilt once and the mohagany core showed no signs of moisture. I guess I just had a hollow spot in the cover.
